TEEN BIRTH RATE RISES FOR FIRST TIME IN 14 YEARS - The teen birth rate in the United States rose in 2006 for the first time since 1991, and unmarried childbearing also rose significantly, according to preliminary birth statistics released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

NEW YORK STATE VICTORY! Spitzer Administration announces rejection of Title V abstinence-only funds for ineffective abstinence-only sex education programs. The State Department of Health cancelled all existing abstinence-only contracts under the federal Title V program. Beginning October 1, the State will redirect state funds to comprehensive sex education programs.

NEW YORK STATE LAUNCHES "HIV STOPS WITH ME" CAMPAIGN - Originally launched in 2005, this unique campaign uses real New Yorkers living with AIDS to convey important messages about HIV prevention and improving the health of infected individuals.

Phase II of the campaign will begin on June 22nd and will run for approximately one year.

KANSAS BOARD OF ED. REPEALS CONSERVATIVE SEX ED POLICIES - On a 6-3 vote, the board replaced the policies with one that recommends "abstinence plus" sex education programs and leaves it up to the state's 296 school districts to decide whether to get parental permission.

ADOLESCENCE: NO LINK TO PROMISCUITY FOUND IN YOUTHS USING CONDOMS - A new study has found that adolescents who use condoms the first time they have intercourse do not go on to have more sexual partners than others, and that they have lower rates of sexually transmitted diseases than those who do not use condoms the first time.
